A great closeup of Jaybrie Brown from our shoot some time ago. Adhering to the same theme of simplicity here. I love the contrast of his shirt with his skin. I'm also diggin the shallow depth of field that draws your into his eyes. This was lit with a large octa boomed overhead and a 64" PLM directly behind myself and and the camera. Skate or Die

-Or just look into his Dreamy eyes.... I really liked how we filled the frame with Miles and his board. The compression at 105mm works well to keep lines straight and image flat. Dimension relies solely on the light and shadows. There was something so intriguing to me about keying from beneath for some of these images and I think I'll be revisiting this setup soon. Lit with Large Octa on the floor and pointed up for main. I filled in shadows with a beauty dish from above. Two rim lights provided by stripboxes on either side. Not so Mr. Nice Guy

Trying a more dramtic look with the key light coming from below with just a bit of fill from a beauty dish above. I'm also letting the rim light rap a around a tad more than I normally would. I love the dram the light creates here. I'm reading a great book my Gregory Heisler in which he remind me that commercially speaking, "men only have to look interesting". http://flic.kr/p/hEtCjY

The Boarder insisde

Epic shot of my friend/photographer Miles. It's rare as a photographer that your favorite photos are inline with each others but I have to admit his picks are pretty dang close to mine! Love the shadows in this shot. This one was lit with a couple gridded stripboxes on either side and slightly behind Miles. Gridded Beauty dish was placed directly above his head. Lastly, an x800 to his right and pointed the background with a 40 degree grid for the background. I love the pattern from the gridded stripbox camera right. http://flic.kr/p/hkimvX

A couple of my favorite dudes! Love these guys and glad we could get some real smiles! Thanks for helping me test out my new grid for my beauty dish. A tiny investement on a huge amount of control of light! Simple enough setup.... Beauty dish above and reflector below for fill. Einstein Greatness

Here's my first selfie with my new Einstein 640 light. I purchased the Cyber Commander as well which means I can now control each light in the studio or on location with one single remote!!! This thing is AMAZING!!!! If any of you know me then you know I'm crazy about my lighting and make several trips back and forth between the lights and my camera before I'm satisfied with the results. Sometimes I wish had a pedometer just so I could log the miles traveled between mere feet between lights and camera. Now when my light is boomed high or group lights are setup high I won't have to bring them down in order to adjust the power I want. Moreover, I can meter from the remote itself! It will give me the readout of each individual light in fstop and I can then correct each individual light to the exact fstop I would like. No more "close enough" exposure even when in a serious time crunch. Suffice it to say, "I'm in love!" Lit with Einstein light in Beauty dish boomed overhead with silver reflector just below frame. AB800's behind and either side for rim lights through strip lights and x800 directly behind for soft spot on black seamless. Melanie

A head shot with Melanie at the West Seattle studio. It's important to use the same modifiers when matching portraits as they can change the color temperature of your shots. You're probably thinking, "just white balance and you're good!" Problem with that is your if you change the color balance and then use your key for the white balance your will inadvertently change both your hair light temperature and your background temperature. The latter of which you client will surely notice when placing images side by side for something like a website or directory. Consistency is everything! Lit with Interfit ex400 camera right and large reflector camera left. Hair light boomed overhead with gridded striplight to keep spill from hitting background and her shoulders.
